Figure 7.1. Similarities and differences between the covenants

When it comes to the differences between the old and new covenants, these two covenants are oceans apart (to return to our illustration of the laws in different countries for the last time). Although some of the laws overlap, when we consider the covenantal context of the laws, the differences between the covenants become very prominent. Remember that this does not mean the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament are oceans apart. In fact, the messages of the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament are very similar. Both underscore the old covenant’s failure to produce righteousness in the lives of God’s people, and both show that God’s work through the Messiah is the only answer for his people. Does this mean that Christians should mentally remove the old covenant laws from the Hebrew Bible? We will address this question in the next chapter.
